Location:

Experimental plots in Rubona, Arboretum of Ruhande in Huye, National Herbarium of Rwanda in Huye, and Nyungwe National Forest

Organizer(s):

Description:

Visit Nyungwe National Park, one of the largest remaining tropical montane forests in Africa, as well as other long term research sites along the way, led by two tropical ecologists with over 40 years of experience in the forest collectively. Nyungwe NP, situated on a montane ridge, serves as a watershed divide between two of the world's largest rivers: the Congo and the Nile. The area is home to over 1100 recorded plant species, 345 bird species, and 85 known mammal species, including 13 of Africa's primates such as chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L'Hoest's monkeys. There are a number of Albertine Rift endemic species in this forest including plants, birds and other taxon groups. The trip will focus on tropical forest ecology, ecophysiology, phenology, and seed dispersal ecology with discussions about ongoing research and conservation issues. The trip will begin on Friday morning 19th July with departure from Kigali together in a bus. The first stop will be to explore a site within the TRopical Elevation gradient Experiment – RwandaTREE project. Then we will move to Huye town to visit the Arboretum of Ruhande, a Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy initiative, and a visit to the National Herbarium of Rwanda. After a night in Huye, we will travel to Nyungwe National Park in the morning, for hiking, botanizing, birding and visiting the phenology trails and other research sites in the forest. Saturday night will be spent in a guesthouse adjacent to the forest. Before departure on Sunday 21st at noon we will go to the Cyamudongo forest remnant, separated from Nyungwe but part of the NNP, for more hiking, botanizing and birding in this lower elevation forest remnant. During these hikes on Saturday and Sunday we may also see various primate species. There is option to do the chimpanzee trekking on Sunday morning at additional expense to the participant who chooses this activity. We will depart NNP by around 1pm and return to Kigali by Sunday evening.

Cost and conditions:

The trip costs approximately $350/person and incudes transportation to and from Nyungwe National Park and Cyamudongo and all other sites we will visit; hotel and breakfast for two nights, drinking water, dinner for two nights, lunches and snacks, park entry and park guide fees.
