Umusambi Village is a beautifully restored wetland area, providing a sanctuary for over 50 endangered Grey Crowned Cranes saved from the illegal pet trade. It is located in Kigali City on KK3 road, near Kabuga adjacent to Bambino super city, Rusororo sector/ Gasabo district. It is approximately 8 minutes from the international airport, and 30 minutes from Kigali City Centre.



As well as the Grey Crowned Cranes, this 21-hectare nature reserve is a peaceful haven for visitors to enjoy the walking trails and immerse in nature, while also learning about our conservation work and the importance of protecting our natural environments. We have also established a butterfly house, where visitors get to learn about pollinators up-close.



Visiting umusambi village will be a unique experience because it is a perfect way to start or end your trip to Rwanda. Spend a half day or longer wandering our walking trails, enjoying a guided or self-guided tour and learning about the importance of this wetland and how we can better protect Grey Crowned Cranes to ensure they do not become extinct.



Umusambi Village is run by internationally acclaimed conservation non-profit Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association, it is an environmentally sound place of interest for socially responsible tourists and locals to visit. The site has been carefully restored, supervised by our dedicated botanists, to remove all invasive and non-native species and populated with a large variety of native plants and trees that can support a rich array of wildlife. During your visit, you will be able to learn about the plants and wildlife around you and understand how important to protect and promote biodiversity.



Umusambi Village is the first and sanctuary in Rwanda, which makes it ideal to offer this field trip experience. It has become part of the solution to ensure that these cranes have a permanent natural home. It is also a home to diverse birds species, that thrives in the embrace of Umusambi Village. Which provides a unique eco-tourism attraction in Kigali city, connecting people and nature.

Cost and conditions:

To visit Umusambi Village requires the following entrance fee:

International Visitors: 20.000Rwf

Resident visitors: 10.000Rwf

East African visitors: 3.000Rwf

Adult Rwandans: 3.000Rwf

All children (2-16 years): 3.000Rwf

All children under two years: Free

Guided Tour (1 hour): 15.000Rwf

Early or Evening tour: 15.000Rwf

Binocular hire: 3.000Rwf

Butterfly house visit: 2.000Rwf



Note that All proceeds from entrance fees go directly back into the running costs of Umusambi Village and to further conservation activities of RWCA.

- The above mentioned prices are for park entrance fee only. All other expenses like car rental and meals are paid separately.

- There is additional cost in the park except for optional costs like binocular hire, butterfly house and guided tour.

- Fee does not change depending on the number of participants who registers. And if someone cancels he/she let us know before the visiting day so we can arrange the refund process.

- Participants who register and wish to visit Umusambi Village, is required to pay at least a half of the entrance fee according to the category they are in ( international, residents etc.)

For snacks, meals and drinks, we have a beautiful coffee shop where you can order and pay. This will be an additional costs because participant will have to pay at the coffee shop. However, for someone who wants to make reservation at the coffee shop, you can let us know and we communicate the coffee shop.
