A showcase of strategic conservation efforts aimed at conserving avian biodiversity in West Africa, encompassing capacity building, citizen science, species survival, and livelihood integration.
West Africa boasts a unique array of irreplaceable birds and critical biodiversity areas, facing threats that demand innovative conservation solutions (Di Marco et al. 2016; Leisher et al. 2022). Initiatives aimed at capacity building, citizen science involvement, strategic species conservation approaches, and community integration play pivotal roles in safeguarding these species and their habitats. However, challenges persist in prioritization and in maintaining a delicate balance between conservation, human needs, and livelihoods. This symposium aims to delve into the diverse range of efforts dedicated to conserving avian biodiversity in West Africa. Presentations will showcase capacity building endeavors for avian conservation in West Africa, citizen science, species survival efforts/partnerships with the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the IUCN, and the crucial connections between conservation and local livelihoods. By fostering discussions on both challenges and successes in ornithological conservation within the region, the symposium aims to inspire collaborative efforts and facilitate knowledge exchange for the conservation of West Africa's biodiversity. Key areas to be explored include:
Capacity building and research diversification: How West Africa is developing its conservation workforce and fostering new areas of research.
Citizen science in action: Examining the impact of citizen science initiatives in Nigeria and their potential for wider application.
Species survival partnerships: Learning from the Center for Species Survival Nigeria's experience in prioritizing species conservation and forging effective partnerships like those with the IUCN Species Survival Commission.
Conservation and livelihoods: Exploring the crucial connection between protecting birds and livelihoods. The vital link between conservation and local livelihoods, emphasizing the importance of fostering mutually beneficial solutions for both people and wildlife.
This session targets a broad audience within ATBC, including researchers, practitioners, educators, and policymakers. By showcasing a multifaceted conservation approaches. The symposium aims to inspire collaborative efforts and guide the development of a sustainable future for West Africa's birds and their ecosystems.
