WORKSHOP SESSIONS

Workshop

Introduction to Environmental Journalism for University and Journalism School Students (Open to all, including those not attending ATBC 2024)

• Sunday, July 14th, 9:00 - 12:00 hrs

Organizer(s):

David Akana, Christophe Assogba, and Juliette Chapalain

This hands-on workshop aims to equip university and journalism students with the skills and knowledge needed to conduct effective environmental journalism, culminating in creating articles with the potential for publication by Mongabay.

This workshop will provide university students with a unique opportunity to learn from experienced Mongabay journalists, engage in real-world reporting at ATBC, and have a chance to have their work published by an award-winning environmental science and conservation news organization. Mongabay staff will guide the students through the entire journalistic process, from identifying story angles and conducting research to writing and editing articles. The goal is for each student to produce a piece that could be published on Mongabay or by ATBC, offering them a significant opportunity to make a tangible impact through their work.

The workshop will consist of four phases: theory, interviews, writing, and pitching.

Phase 1 - Theory: The workshop will begin with a pre-conference session where students receive a theoretical introduction to environmental journalism. Topics will cover the essentials of reporting, ethics, and storytelling within the context of environmental conservation.

Phase 2 - Interviews: Students will engage directly with the ATBC conference, conducting interviews with attendees to gather insights and stories. The practical assignment encourages students to apply their newfound knowledge in a real-world setting, culminating in articles that reflect their findings.

Phase 3 - Writing: Students will transition from gathering insights to crafting their stories. Participants will learn how to structure their articles, integrate their interviews and research, and employ compelling storytelling techniques to engage readers. Emphasis will be placed on writing clear, accurate, and engaging content that adheres to journalistic standards.

Phase 4 - Pitching: After the conference, students will submit their articles to Mongabay for potential publication and ATBC for use on their communication channels, providing students with a significant opportunity to contribute to environmental journalism and communication.
