Workshop

Multilingual Exploration of the Values of Tropical Diversity

• Monday, July 15th, 10:00 - 12:00 hrs

Organizer(s):

Patricia Balvanera

In this workshop we will identify the diversity of values of nature at that stake in different social ecological contexts, what are the power relations among those values and the value holders, how to build a more plural valuation, and what is the role of the tropical ecologists

The values of nature are very diverse accross contexts, scales and stakeholder groups. Yet, only a small fraction of this diversity is taken into account in decisions about nature, namely those linked to those that are accounted for through marked mechanisms or those that are imposed by global conservation policies. In this workshop we will identify the diversity of values of nature that at stake in different social ecological contexts, what are the power relations among those values and the value holders, how to build a more plural valuation, and what is the role of the tropical ecologists towards more plurar decision making processes. The workshop will be run simultaneously in english, french and spanish, and will be divided into two different phases. One: single language exploration, by dividing participants in at least three different breakouts, one for each prefered language. The breaout teams at each "table" will: 1- identify a specific context in which each of them have worked, 2- identify the diversity of values of nature held by the different stakeholders, 3- discuss the power relations among the different values and stakeholders, 4- identify opportunities towards more plural decision making, 5- reflect on their personal positionality with respect to those values and plural decision making proccesses. Two: members of the different breakout teams will move to a different table and share, in the language and way that is most comfortable to them, what were the main insights gained at their table; emphasis will be put on how much the choice of language determined how the exploration was undertaken. Materials derived from the Assessment on the Diverse Values of Nature by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES VA), in each of the three languages, will be used as guidance through the different stages of the workshop.
